Measurements of pionic and muonic X-ray transitions in nitrogen, neon, and
oxygen have been performed at the Paul-Scherrer-Institut (PSI). The cyclotron
trap was used to stop the high intensity pion beam in a gas target with
one bar pressure. At one bore hole of the cyclotron trap a high resolution
crystal spectrometer was attached. The X-rays were reflected from spherically
bent silicon crystals and recorded in Charge-Coupled Devices of high
granularity. The pionic and muonic 5-4 transitions show a significant
broadening as compared to the transitions from pionic neon. The increase of
the line widths is interpreted as Doppler broadening originating from
the Coulomb explosion in the diatomic molecules.
