Final State Baryon Distributions and Energy Flow in Central Pb+Pb Collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon — •A. Sandoval — GSI Darmstadt
The CERN NA49 Experiment measures rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of pion, kaons, protons and hyperons. From the rapidity distributions of protons and hyperons, extrapolated to all net baryons one can determine a measure of baryon stopping from their average rapidity shift. For central Pb+Pb collisions this turns out to be 2 ±0.3 rapidity units. Taking into account their transverse momentum distributions an average energy loss per participating nucleon can be evaluated and turns out to be 6 ±1 GeV. This is to be compared to the c.m. kinetic energy per nucleon before the collision of 7.66 GeV.
How the stopped energy is distributed into the produced particles can be studied in the same event sample, in particular the fraction that goes into strange and non-strange particles. Results from central Pb+Pb collisions on pions, kaons, protons, antiprotons and hyperons will be compared to those of S+S and Nucleon-Nucleon interactions.
