Search for direct Photons with CERES — •M. Messer for the CERES Collaboration — Physikalisches Institut der Universität Heidelberg, Philosophenweg 12, D-69120 Heidelberg

In autumn 1996 the CERES Experiment recorded 5.5 million events from Pb-Au collisions at 160 GeV/c per nucleon in a dedicated photon run. In order to obtain a clear signature from conversions of photons into an electron-positron pair, a converter was installed between the two silicon drift detectors which form the target telescope in CERES.
The interest of such a setup lies in the potential detection and study of photons which may be emitted in excess of those coming from hadron decays. Such a signal, which is theoretically predicted for a hot hadron gas, or even more interestingly, for a phase transition into a quark-gluon plasma, has so far not been observed in experiment.
We present the status of the analysis and discuss implications.
