The performance and applicability of PbWO4 as a fast scintillator material in the energy regime below 1 GeV has been investigated at MAMI using tagged photons down to energies as low as Eγ = 50 MeV. A matrix consisting of 25 crystals (20x20x150-200mm3) provided by suppliers from China and Russia was used to determine the response function of the electromagnetic shower at 15 different discrete energies up to 790 MeV. The scintillators were individually read-out by photomultiplier tubes and operated at a temperature stabilized at T = 80C. Excellent energy (σ/E=1.54%/√E[GeV] + 0.30%) and time resolution (σt=130 ps) have been achieved and will be compared to results obtained for electrons and to similar measurements using the high resolution calorimeter TAPS, which uses BaF2 as scinitillator material.
