A Dual Radiator RICH for HERMES — •R. Kaiser — DESY Zeuthen, Platanenallee 6, D-15738 Zeuthen
The Hermes experiment uses the polarised positron beam of the Hera accelerator together with a polarised internal gas target to study the spin structure of the nucleon. Semi-inclusive measurements that detect and identify leading hadrons in coincidence with the scattered lepton can be used to identify the struck parton. This flavour tagging method in combination with the use of different target gases allows to separate the contributions of the quark flavours to the spin of the nucleon. For these measurements it is of particular importance to be able to identify the hadrons in the spectrometer. To this purpose a RICH detector with a dual aerogel-gas radiator will be installed in the Hermes experiment to replace the previously used gas threshold Cerenkov detector. This novel detector will allow to identify pions, kaons and protons over the entire momentum range of the experiment (2-20 GeV).
