A set of low-mass drift chambers with high granularity has been developed for the new di-lepton spectrometer HADES. 24 trapezoidal chamber modules will be arranged in a frustum-like geometry to form 4 tracking planes of increasing size, either two of which will be located in front of and behind the torodial field region of the HADES spectrometer. Construction aspects of the second largest tracking plane (III) (active area: 2.3× 2 m2, drift cell size: 8 × 12 mm2) are presented. Aiming for an invariant mass resolution of < 1% the total radiation length of the tracking system is kept sufficiently low. Recently a full size prototype with dimensions of a plane II module was tested with sources and in two beam experiments, yielding resolutions around 70 µ m (σ) over more than 80 % of a drift cell thus confirming results obtained before with small size prototypes. Operating aspects of the prototype chambers, including good ageing behaviour, are discussed.
