A High Resolution Tracking Detector Based on Glass Capillaries Filled with Liquid Scintillator and Optoelectronic Read-Out — •T. Wolff1,2, D. Bonekämper1, D. Frekers1, K. Holtz1, D. Rondeshagen1, K. Winter2, and H.J. Wörtche11Westf. Wilhelms-Universität Münster — 2Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

A detector type is introduced which can be used as tracking or vertex detector because of a µm spatial resolution. The detector is built of glass capillaries filled with liquid scintillator. The read-out consists of an image intensifier chain with a CCD at its end. Different prototypes are tested at CERN.

The technique provides high hit densities and a vertex resolution better than 30 µm. The radiation hardness of more than 100 Mrad makes capillary arrays superior to other types of tracking devices with comparable performance.

In test setups two different capillary bundles (1.8 m and 0.9 m in length) have been in operation. One of them was equipped with a conventional optoelectronic read-out chain and the other with an ”Electron Bombarded CCD” image tube for the first time. The collaboration is also engaged in developing large capillary arrays.

The technology is discussed, development results are presented and examples of interactions and decay vertices of short lived particles are shown.
