The high resolution spectroscopy of the Balmer α transitions of the antiprotonic hydrogen isotopes has been performed at LEAR. The antiproton beam was stopped using the cyclotron trap at a gas pressure of 20 mbar and the X-rays were measured with a high resolution Bragg crystal spectrometer. For the first time, the strong interaction shift and broadening of the 23P0 hyperfine state in protonium could be observed. The results support the meson-exchange models describing the medium and long range part of the nucleon-antinucleon interaction. The observation of the strong interaction effects in the 2p level of antiprotonic deuterium allows the direct comparison of the two elementary antiprotonic systems.
