Search for pionic atoms in 209Bi(p,2p)208Bi⊗π — •W. Klimala — Institute of Physics, Jagellonian University, ul. Reymonta 4, PL-30059 Cracow, Poland

We have performed an experiment in order to search for deeply bound pionic states in heavy nuclei using the magnetic spectrometer BIG KARL at COSY. The elementary p+n → π +p+p reaction close to recoil free kinematics was employed with the remaining nucleus 208Bi acting as spectator.[1,2]

Two protons measured in coincidence in the focal plane of Big Karl allowed missing mass reconstruction of the pion-nucleus system. With additional time of flight and energy loss information from two layers of a scintillator hodoscope particle identification was possible.

The steps of the analysis of the experimental data will be presented including Monte Carlo calculations for detection efficiency of the interesting process. The results of the GEANT simulations of background coming not from the target will be also shown.
