The 2p-1s transition in pionic deuterium has been measured at the high intensity πE5 beam of the Paul-Scherrer-Institut (PSI). The cyclotron trap was used to stop the beam in a gas target at 2.5 bar pressure. The X-radiation was measured with a high-resolution crystal spectrometer equipped with a spherically bent silicon crystal and a Charge-Coupled Device for the recording of the reflected X-rays. The very high beam-induced background could be suppressed almost completely with a concrete shielding surrounding the crystal spectrometer. In this way, a peak-to-background ratio of about 70 could be achieved, which is an improvement by more than one order of magnitude as compared to previous measurements in pionic deuterium. New values for the strong interaction shift and width of the 1s level have been extracted.
