The spectrometer SPI on-board INTEGRAL — •Robert Georgii — Max-Planck Institut für extraterrestrische Physik, Giessenbachstr., D-85740 Garching

SPI (SPectrometer on-board of Integral) will be a high-spectral resolution gamma-ray telescope consisting of an array of 19 high- resolution Ge-detectors using a hexagonal coded mask for imaging. It will be flown on-board of INTEGRAL (INTErnational Gamma RAy Laboratory), the next medium-sized gamma-ray mission of ESA to be launched in 2001. The main scientific goals of the mission are high-precision spectral measurements of gamma-ray lines of cosmic radioactive nuclei. Besides a description of the instrument with its properties, the main emphasis of this talk will concentrate on the capability of SPI in observing especially the annihilation line at 511 keV and the lines of radioactive nuclei such as 26Al and 44Ti. Those nuclei are produced during the nucleosynthesis in stars shortly before a Supernova explosion and are excellent tracers for recent star-formation (26Al) or young hidden Supernovae (44Ti).
