Electron screening of the 2H(d,p)3H reaction in metal hydrides — •A. Huke, A. Biller, S. Chun, K. Czerski, P. Heide, M. Hoeft, and G. Ruprecht — Institut f"ur Atomare und Analytische Physik, Technische Universit"at Berlin

The 2H(d,p)3H reaction has been investigated for beam energies between 5 and 60 keV on four deuteron implanted metal targets (Al,Zr,Pd,Ta). Angular distributions and the total reaction cross sections have been determined by use of four Si-detectors located at backward angles. An exponential enhancement of the cross section, arising from electron screening of the nuclear charge, is observed for deuteron energies below 25 keV for all targets. The screening energies estimated from our experimental data are about one order of magnitude larger than the values determined from gas target experiments. Additionally, a target material dependence of the screening energy values is clearly observed. Such strong electron screening of the 2H(d,p)3H reaction in metal hydrides can be explained by including a dynamical electron screening due to free moving valence electrons. The theoretical predictions will be compared with our experimental results.
