Charged and Neutral Polarized Hydrogen Beams from the New Stern-Gerlach Type Ion Source for the Munich Tandem Accelerator — •R. Hertenberger, N. Eckmann, Y. Eisermann, A. Hofmann, A. Metz, P. Schiemenz, and G. Graw — Sektion Physik der Universität München, D-85748 Garching
The new Stern-Gerlach polarized ion source for the Munich 14 MV tandem accelerator provides a beam intensity of 6.4*1016 neutral polarised H1→ atoms / sec at the entrance of the ECR ionizer (10 mm in diameter). This is equivalent to 10 particle-mA before ionisation. A two-step charge exchange unit, an electron cyclotron resonance ionizer (ECR) followed by a cesium gas target, seems to be well suited for the preparation of negative hydrogen beams of high brilliance: A positive polarized beam is extracted from the electron cyclotron resonance ionizer (ECR) and accelerated to about 500 eV per nucleon. The pick-up of two electrons in a cesium gas target of 1015 atoms per cm2 has at this energy a probability of up to 30 %. We report on the performance of neutral and charged H and D beams with emphasis on the efficiency of the ECR ionizer, on measurements of degree of dissociation, and on beam diagnostics.
