Radio-Frequency-Quadrupole (RFQ)-accelerators for radioactive ions. — •T. Sieber1, D. Habs1, O. Kester1, and A. Schempp21Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Am Coulombwall 1, D-85748 Garching — 2Institut für Angewandte Physik, Robert-Mayer Str.2-4, 60325 Frankfurt/Main

For the planned REX-ISOLDE-project at CERN and the fission fragment accelerator of the new munich high-flux reactor, RFQ-accelerators are under development. For REX-ISOLDE a 4-rod-RFQ is currently built up and will be assembled in December ’97. This RFQ has a length of 3m. It will accelerate neutron-rich ions with A/q=4.5 from 5keV/u to 300keV/u and operates at 101.28MHz with a duty-cycle of 10%.

For the fission fragment accelerator investigations are under progress on an IH-type RFQ. In this accelerator the quadrupole electrodes are fixed with interdigital holders in a cavity (excited in the TE111 mode). MAFIA calculations show, that this RFQ-type could also be used for higher frequencies in comparison to the GSI high-current-injector (36 MHz, diameter 0.76m)[1]. Advantages of this structure might be a high efficiency, easy electrode-cooling and the possibility to use finger drift-tubes in connection with a quadrupole. The IH-RFQ will operate at 101.28MHz and accelerate ions with A/q=6.3 to about 300keV/u. The particle-dynamics will be similar to the REX-RFQ, including a high transmission (98%) and a matching-out section.
