Polarized Target Material Preparation for COMPASS — •A. Meier, St. Goertz, M. Grosse–Stoltenberg, J. Harmsen, W. Meyer, E. Radtke, G. Reicherz, M. Schlüter, and Th. Zawodny — Ruhr-Universität Bochum
One major part of the COMPASS experiment is the measurement of the gluon spin content of the nucleon which requires the ability to observe very small cross section asymmetries. For that purpose its necessary to maximize the effective nucleon polarization of the target which is the product of the achieveable maximum polarization and the relative content of the polarizable nucleons. In additon a high density material should be used, because of the low intensity polarized µ-beam available. These requirements can be fullfilled best with the use of 6LiD. In order to enable the dynamical nucleon polarization (DNP) process dilute paramagnetic impurities have to be implanted into the diamagnetic crystalls. In the case of the lithium hydrides these centers are created via irradiation with high energy eletrons at a well defined temperature. For the preparation of the enormous amount of material (∼ 850 cm3) a new irradiation cryostat has been developed which allows a precise and variable setting of the irradiation temperature. With the help of EPR and NMR studies at different magnetic field and temperature conditions the excellent polarization behaviour of this material will be further improved.
