A Polarimeter for the Recirculating COSY Beam* — •F. Bauer, D. Albers, and K. Büßer — I. Institut für Experimentalphysik, Universität Hamburg, Luruper Chaussee 149, 22761 Hamburg
Cooled proton beams in conjunction with internal targets allow to study few nucleon reactions with high precision. At COSY, preparations are under way for experiments with a polarized beam during acceleration to the maximum momentum of 3.4 GeV/c. We have developed and applied a compact polarimeter for beam diagnostics that is based on elastic p→p scattering from a thin (14µ) polypropylene fiber target. It measures right–left asymmetries in the whole momentum range with two pairs of segmented scintillator telescopes for the scattered and rescattered proton in kinematic coincidence. Background originating from p–C interactions is taken care of with supplementary measurements using a pure carbon target. For correction of asymmetries in detector geometry and efficiency the polarimeter can be rotated around the beam axis.
In 1997 the polarimeter has been used at fixed beam momenta as well as during beam acceleration. We will report on polarimeter design and performance.
