Tests of detector components of the Focal Plane Polarimeter at KVI — •V. Hannen — Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut, Groningen, The Netherlands
A Focal-Plane Polarimeter (FPP) for the Big-Bite Spectrometer at AGOR has been designed by the EUROSUPERNOVA collaboration and is presently being assembled and tested at the KVI. The setup will be used for measurements of spin observables in intermediate energy proton-nucleus scattering including experiments near or at 0∘ scattering angle. The FPP consists of a set of four Multi Wire Proportional Chambers (MWPCs), a carbon analyzer located between the first two MWPCs, and two scintillator arrays S1 and S2 which trigger the readout. Energy loss information is extracted from the scintillators using a fast TDC (<2 µ s conversion time) to measure the time over threshold of the photomultiplier signals. In this way the use of usually slower ADCs is avoided. Readout of the MWPCs is accomplished using newly designed preamp boards based on the ASD-8 chip developed at the University of Pennsylvania. The preamp signals are then converted to ECL level and read out with LeCroy’s PCOS III system. Results of test measurements involving one of the MWPCs and two scintillator paddles using a 190 MeV proton beam will be presented.
