For the gantry of the proton irradiation facility at the
Paul–Scherrer–Institute a detector system for fast in–vivo
protonradiography was developped and installed. The system will be used
for quality assurance of the tumor therapy with protons
but also as diagnostic tool with good density resolution and with
low doses to the patient.
For each proton the entrance and exit coordinates are measured in coincidence
with the residual range. Scintillating fiber hodoscopes are used
as position–sensitive detectors, while the range
of the protons is measured by a stack of scintillator plates.
A fast front–end electronics and data–acquisition system can
register protons at a rate up to one million events per second.
Radiographs of phantoms show the expected
spatial and density resolution. The possibility for detecting
inhomogeneities
in the target volume is discussed.
