Scintillating Fibre Hodoscopes for COSY-TOF and COMPASS* — •W. Eyrich, M. Fritsch, J. Hauffe, A. Metzger, W. Schroeder, F. Stinzing, A. Teufel, J. Wächter, M. Wagner, and S. Wirth — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Erwin-Rommel-Str. 1, D-91058 Erlangen
At the Cooler Synchrotron COSY detector arrays of scintillating fibres are used in different experiments. In this contribution we mainly report on the experience with scintillating fibre hodoscopes in the COSY Time-of-Flight (TOF) spectrometer.
The apparatus consists of an inner start detector system close to the target and an outer stop detector system both mounted inside a vacuum vessel. Apart from silicon microstrip components arrays of scintillating fibres are used in one of the two available inner detector systems to identify and reconstruct the events of interest. An additional intermediate fibre hodoscope can be used in combination with both inner detector systems. Squared fibres are in operation together with multianode photomultipliers (Hamamatsu R4760 and H6568). The calibration, energy response, position resolution and reconstruction efficiency are discussed on real data and compared with MC simulations.
Moreover tests were performed for the application of scintillating fibres in the new experiment COMPASS at CERN. Here special emphasis lies on high rate capability and time resolution.
