The Central Calorimeter for COSY/TOF∗ — •J. Kreß1, R. Bilger1, H. Clement1, R. Geyer2, K. Kilian2, E. Roderburg2, and G.J. Wagner1 — 1Physikalisches Institut der Universität Tübingen, Auf der Morgenstelle 14, D-72076 Tübingen — 2IKP Forschungszentrum Jülich — and the COSY/TOF Collaboration
The primary information, which the TOF spectrometer at COSY provides
about detected particles, is their time of flight and their angles of
emission. For many cases this is sufficient for a reliable event
reconstruction. For spectroscopy of fast particles, however, an
energy determination by a calorimeter will be superior to the TOF
information. In addition such a calorimeter will allow the installation
of the “delayed pulse technique”, which enables an identification
of stopped positively charged pions and kaons by their weak decays.
Hence a central calorimeter, consisting of 84 hexagonal
plastic scintillators of length 45 cm is being constructed, which
will be located just behind the “quirl”. Whereas the scintillators will
be inside the vacuum tank, the photomultipliers will be mounted on
air. Special emphasis has to be put on an optimum light guidance
enabling both vacuum feed-through and a mechanical decoupling
between scintillator and photomultiplier.
