Besides the large γ−ray spectrometers (like EUROBALL or
GAMMASPHERE) more compact and flexible systems are needed, e.g.
at the future radioactive-beam facilities.
Still, a large total photopeak efficiency Pph is essential
for such arrays, particularly for experiments with low event rates.
To reduce the amount of Germanium (and thereby the costs) future
γ−ray arrays will consist of segmented Ge detectors in order to keep
the solid angle of the sensitive detector elements small. Furthermore, such
arrays have to be flexible to allow different applications and set-ups.
One would like to realize single BGO-shielded
Ge crystals as well as complex clustered detector structures.
Such a modular system on the basis of the segmented and encapsulated
EUROBALL/MINIBALL HPGe detector elements
([1],[2]) will be presented. The additional
items of the LEGO-kit (Largely Extendable
Gamma-ray-detector Objects) are a variable cryostat
for various numbers of encapsulated detectors and, in addition,
BGO escape-suppression shield-elements,
which fit to the different shapes of the endcaps. Examples for the
versatility of the system as well as values for efficiency and Add-Back
factors will be given.
