Design of a β Trigger for the Mini-Ball Array. — •W.F. Mueller, M. Huyse, K. Krouglov, and P. Van Duppen — IKS, KU Leuven

As nuclear structure studies come closer to the proton and neutron driplines the need for more sensitive detection setups becomes an absolute necessity. An example of such a design is the Mini-ball array of Ge detectors where 42 large-volume segmented Ge crystals will be grouped in clusters of three to seven and placed in a compact 4π arrangement [1]. One particular application of this array would be the study of β-delayed γ decay (for an example of such an experiment see Ref. [2]). Because of the very low production cross section of nuclei near the dripline (particularly on the neutron-rich side) the design of a β trigger must serve a two-fold purpose. First, the design must have high efficiency, thus necessitating a 4π design. In these decay experiments, a significant source of background in the Ge detectors results from scattered β particles. Thus a second design criterion is that the β detector should be segmented such that it can also be used to veto β events occurring a Ge crystal. Simulations have been conducted in order to detemine the best configuration to satisify these two conditions. The results of these simulations as well as comparison with experimental measurements will be discussed.
