The new fission fragment detector will be used for the γ-spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei produced by fission sources like 250Cf/252Cf. The detector enables one to gain information about both charge and mass of a fission fragment in coincidence with γ-rays emitted by this fragment and its corresponding partner and measured with a HPGe detector. This is achieved by a detector that combines a gas chamber to measure the energy loss, and a silicon surface-barrier detector or a solar cell to measure the total kinetic energy of the fragment. Preliminary experiments using a prototype detector with small solid angle as well as design studies for a detector with larger solid angle will be presented.
