A new preamplifier for the segmented HPGe detectors* — •D. Weißhaar1, G. Pascovici1, J. Eberth1, H.G. Thomas1, and L. Palafox21Institut für Kernphysik, Universität zu Köln — 2Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Heidelberg

In the framework of the MINIBALL project [1,2] a six-fold segmented encapsulated HPGe detector has been developed which corresponds in size and shape to the elements of the EUROBALL CLUSTER detector. The segmentation as well as the radial position sensitivity extracted from pulse shape analysis reduces the effective solid angle of the detector and thus the Doppler broadening of γ-rays emitted from fast moving nuclei. These properties are needed for experiments proposed for the new radioactive beam facilities like REX-ISOLDE.
Each detector requires seven preamplifiers - one for the core and six for the segments - of small size, fast risetime for optimum pulse shape analysis, and an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. As such preamplifiers are not available commercially, a new preamplifier for Ge detectors has been developed in Köln. The preamplifier is designed in SMD technique and meets above mentioned requirements. The performance of a six-fold segmented encapsulated Ge detector equipped with these preamplifiers was tested in-beam and with radioactive sources.
