In 1997 the first barrel detector for the COSY-TOF spectrometer was completed. The “Barrel” consists of 3 m long scintillator bars which are read out from both ends. With the implementation of this detector part in addition to the endcap, scattering angles up to 80 become accessible with flight paths up to 3 m. The detector was tested with cosmic rays and was already used in a pp-experiment at COSY running at beam momenta around 800 MeV/c close to the 1π-threshold. Prototype tests showed position resolutions of 8 cm (FWHM) and time resolutions of 0.7 ns (FWHM). They are typical for the full set up for which results of performance studies using experimental data will be presented.
