Study of Δ N and Δ Δ excitations in the reactions pp ↔ π+ d and pn ↔ (π π )0 d — •C. A. Mosbacher and F. Osterfeld — Institut für Kernphysik, Forschungszentrum Jülich, D–52425 Jülich, Germany
We investigate the reactions pp → π+ d and pn → (π π )0 d in an energy region where the pions are dominantly produced via the Δ (1232) isobar resonance. By means of detailed balance, the pions are considered to excite a Δ N or a Δ Δ subsystem, respectively, from the deuteron target. In order to incorporate the interaction dynamics of these subsystems in a proper and efficient way, we apply a coupled channel approach [1] deduced from Δ–hole models. This allows us to study the direct Δ N and Δ Δ interactions which are constructed within a meson–exchange model [2,3]. The exchanged mesons taken into account are the pion (π), the rho (ρ), the omega (ω), and the sigma (σ).
Theoretical calculations of total and differential cross sections are compared to the experimental data. The influence of the Δ N and Δ Δ potentials on various observables is discussed.
