The S-wave isoscalar pion–nucleon scattering length a+ from pion scattering off deuterium — •Ulf-G. Meißner4, S.R. Beane1, V. Bernard2, and T.-S.H. Lee31Univ. Maryland, Physics Dept., USA — 2Univ. Louis Pasteur,Strasbourg, Frankreich — 3Argonne Nat. Lab., USA — 4FZ Jülich, IKP (Th)

We consider constraints on the isoscalar S-wave π-N scattering length a+ from π-deuteron scattering, to third order in small momenta and pion masses in chiral perturbation theory [1,2]. To this order, the π-deuteron scattering length is determined by a+ together with three-body corrections that involve no undetermined parameters. We find a+ = −(3.0±0.5) · 10−3Mπ−1 [2] which is compatible with recent determinations from the line shift and width of pionic hydrogen measured at PSI. We also extract a novel value for a combination of dimension two low–energy constants which is in agreement with previous determinations.
