High spin states in nuclei in the 208Pb region were populated in deep inelastic collisions of 136Xe and 208Pb projectiles with thick 208Pb targets at energies about 10% above the Coulomb barrier. Prompt and prompt–delayed γ–γ coincidences were measured.
New high spin states have been identified in 209Pb and 210Pb nuclei, which are interpreted as resulting from excitations of a neutron coupled to 208Pb core excited states and excitations of two valence neutrons in the g9/2, i11/2 and j15/2 orbitals respectively. Results are discussed in the frame of particle phonon coupling and large scale shell model calculations including excitations of the 208Pb core.
