Studies of the high-K isomers in the A∼ 180 region have uncovered the existence of direct branches to the low-K rotational bands with unexpectly large transition probabilities. Two mechanism suggested for such transitions include coriolis mixing of different K values and γ-tunneling through an energy barrier in a triaxial landscape.
The most spectacular examples of K-isomerism are, however, predicted to lie just to the neutron-rich side of the valley of stability.
To investigate the role of the different approaches for K-forbidden transitions we performed a deep-inelastic reaction using a 208Pb beam of 6.6 MeV/u onto a thick enriched 198Pt target.
With two large segmented Clover detectors γ−γ in beam and γ−γdelayed coincidences were taken to determine the level structure. The experiment covered an extended range of half-lives and first results will be presented.
