Lifetime measurements have been performed under nearly identical
conditions in five superdeformed bands in 193−196Pb using
the Gammasphere spectrometer array. Two Doppler–shift attenuation
methods, the fractional shift as well as the line shape analysis,
were used. The transition quadrupole moments are found to be
remarkably similar, around Qt = 20 b, for the yrast bands in
194Pb (band 1), 195Pb (bands 1 and 2) and 196Pb
(band 1). For 193Pb, however, a significantly smaller value,
Qt = 17.3(7) b, is obtained. An explanation in terms of the
occupation of the N = 7 intruder orbitals is given.
