Existence and Stability of Bubble Nuclei — •Klaus Dietrich and Krzysztof Pomorski — Physik-Department, TU M"unchen, James-Franckstrasse, D-85747 Garching
We investigated the existence and stability of bubble nuclei using Strutinsky’s method of calculating the binding energy including shell corrections. We found that the liquid drop model (LDM) energetically favours bubble shapes for fissility parameters X>2.2. For closed shells of neutrons or protons, the additional binding energy by the shell structure may produce nuclei which are practically stable versus fission for mass numbers ≥ 700. Estimates show that the α-decay lifetime may also be substantial.
