Dileptons from open charm and bottom: signal or background in high–energy heavy–ion collisions ? — •K. Gallmeister1, B. Kämpfer1, and O.P. Pavlenko1,2 — 1Research Center Rossendorf, PF 510119, 01314 Dresden, Germany — 2Institute for Theoretical Physics, 252143 Kiev, Ukraine
We analyze the background in dilepton spectra resulting from semi-leptonic decays of open charm and bottom to estimate its relative strength as compared to the Drell-Yan and thermal contributions. Energy loss and nuclear shadowing effects are considered in order to elucidate whether a thermal dilepton signal or the gluon shadowing via the charm signal might be observable in the acceptances of the RHIC–PHENIX and LHC–ALICE detector systems.
