We have investigated coherent bremsstrahlung in the α + p reaction, using a 200 MeV α beam from the AGOR cyclotron at KVI Groningen and a liquid-hydrogen target. The experiment has been performed with the Two-Arm Photon Spectrometer TAPS in coincidence with the Small-Angle Large-Acceptance Detector SALAD in order to measure photons in coincidence with the scattered particles.
At high photon energies the coherent process appears to be dominated by capture, populating the two lowest states of particle-unstable 5Li. The angular distribution follows the systematics of proton capture in light nuclei, and is consistent with a low-energy theorem describing capture in stable nuclei. The results are important for the planned study of bremsstrahlung from the halo neutrons in the 6He + p reaction. Exclusive data involving photon-particle coincidences are being analyzed.
