Design of the Muon Identification System for the Solar Neutrino Experiment BOREXINO — •T. Hagner

The solar neutrino experiment BOREXINO is located at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory LNGS in Italy. Although the muon rate in a depth of 3500mwe is reduced by a factor of 10−6, cosmic rays are still one of the greatest sources of background events in the detector. Since the predicted Be neutrino signal rate is less than 50 counts/day (depending on the physics scenario) a highly efficient muon veto system to distinguish between cosmic ray events and neutrino signals is required.

In this report the different types of cosmogenic background events in the BOREXINO detector are discussed and the design features of the muon recognition system are described. Furthermore the muon induced radioactive background is estimated from new results of an experiment at the SPS muon beam at CERN.
