Effective Abelian Theory for Yang-Mills Theory in Maximal Abelian Gauge — •M. Quandt and H. Reinhardt — Institut f"ur Theoretische Physik, Universit"at T"ubingen, Auf der Morgenstelle 14, D-72076 T"ubingen.
Recent lattice calculations on Yang-Mills theory in the Maximal Abelian gauge indicate that the relevant degrees of freedom in the infrared are given by the Abelian gauge field components only.
To study this approach in the continuum, we present a reformulation of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge, where the non-Abelian gauge field components are exactly integrated out at the expense of a new Abelian tensor field [1]. The latter can be treated in a semiclassical approximation and the corresponding saddle point equation is derived. Besides the non-trivial solutions, which are presumably related to non-perturbative interactions for the Abelian gauge field, the equation of motion for the tensor fields allows for a trivial solution as well. We show that the semiclassical expansion around this trivial solution is equivalent to the usual perturbation theory and recover the standard result for the one-loop β-function in this approach.
For the discussion of the dual Meissner effect, a magnetic U(1) symmetry is required. We show that the new tensor field in our effective Abelian theory gives rise to such a dual photon field and comment on the relation to magnetic monopoles.
