The Monitored Drift Tube (MDT) Chambers perform the precision coordinate measurement in the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS Experiment. The basic detection element is a cylindrical aluminium drift tube of 30 mm diameter and a W-Re central wire of 50µm diameter. It is operated with nonflammable gas composed of Ar(91%), N2(4%) and CH4(5%), at 3 bar absolute pressure. Extensive quality assurance tests are required since, once a drift tube is part of an MDT chamber, repair becomes virtually impossible. Therefore during or directly after drift tube fabrication, wire tension, leak rate, wire location and proper operation of each drift tube will be verified. These tests have been performed for a prototype chamber consisting of 500 tubes. The wire position of a tube has been measured using X-Rays and a special X-Ray sensitive CCD. The measured r.m.s. precision is better than 5 µm.
