New techniques to calculate two-loop splitting functions in QCD — •Gudrun Heinrich and Zoltan Kunszt — Institute for Theoretical Physics, ETH Zürich, Hönggerberg, 8093 Zürich, Switzerland
In order to calculate high precision cross sections for any process where
hadrons are involved, the knowledge of parton densities is mandatory. The
momentum dependence of these parton desities is governed by an
Altarelli-Parisi equation generalized to all orders in the strong coupling
constant αS. The kernel of this evolution equation is related to the
splitting functions which can be calculated perturbatively in αS.
The two-loop results for these splitting functions are available by now even
in the spin dependent case. But as yet there is no method which is both,
formally solid and highly efficient enough to allow the extension to three
loops.
Our results concerning the calculation of the two-loop splitting functions may
considerably improve this situation.
