Balanced homodyne detection has been a very fruitful and powerful method for measuring the quantum statistics of optical fields. We show that the method can be advantageously used for direct sampling of the exponential moments of the canonical phase from the homodyne data. We derive closed solutions (and numerical implementations) for the sampling functions and show that they apply to any physical state. The latter ensures a unified approach to phase measurement in both the classical and the quantum regime, differences between them being essentially observed in the vicinity of the vacuum. Owing to their little structurization, the sampling functions are very suitable for reducing the statistical error that is unavoidably present in practice. Knowing all exponential phase moments, the phase statistics is completely determined. In particular, the phase distribution can be given in terms of the exponential moments as a Fourier series.
