Interaction of a dense Bose-Einstein condensate with electromagnetic fields: local-field effect — •K. Krutitsky, F. Burgbacher, and J. Audretsch — Universität Konstanz, Fakultät für Physik, AG Audretsch, Fach M674, 78457 Konstanz
A quantum theory of the interaction of electromagnetic field with a Bose-Einstein condensate, which is valid for arbitrary density of the atomic system, is developed. We show that at high enough densities the local-field effect, which is a direct consequence of dynamical dipole-dipole interactions, plays an important role. The influence of this effect on Bragg scattering of atoms from a standing light wave is also investigated.
