Boundary effects in the process of spontaneous emission in one-dimesional chain of dipoles — •K. Krutitsky and J. Audretsch — Universität Konstanz, Fakultät für Physik, AG Audretsch, Fach M674, 78457 Konstanz

The boundary problem of quantum optics for the spontaneous emission of a two-level atom embedded in a one-dimensional chain of discrete dipoles is solved. The role of boundary effects caused by the violation of translational symmetry in a atomic spatial distribution is investigated. The life time of the excited state and the frequency shift of the atomic transition are calculated. It is shown that these spectral characteristics significantly depend on the atomic position in the chain. The angular distribution of spontaneous photons is also investigated.
