It is well known that balanced homodyne detection can be used for direct sampling of the photon-number statistics of a radiation field mode from the measured quadrature-component distributions. Here we show that the method also applies to the direct determination of the exponential moments of the canonical (London) phase. This enables us to experimentally verify fundamental number–phase uncertainty relations that have been studied theoretically. Further, the sampled exponential phase moments can advantageously be used to reconstruct the canonical phase distribution in a straightforward way by simple summation. In the experiments both coherent states and squeezed states produced by a parametric amplifier are considered.
