Growth and magnetism of Fe ultrathin films on Cu(111) prepared by Thermal Deposition and Pulsed Laser Deposition — •P. Ohresser, J. Shen, Ch. V. Mohan, M. Zheng, M. Klaua, J. Barthel, and J. Kirschner — Max-Planck Institut f"ur Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, D-06120 Halle (Saale)

The transition from the metastable γ-phase to the body centered cubic (bcc) phase in ultrathin Fe films deposited on Cu(111) depends on the morphology of the film, in particular on the island size of the growing film which plays a major role in the strain release [1]. Fe films prepared by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) differ strongly from that grown by thermal methods leading to different structural as well as magnetic properties. Ultrathin Fe layers grown on Cu(111) single crystal at low temperature by PLD using a KrF excimer laser are investigated by Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED), Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and Magneto Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE). This growth proceeds mainly in two steps. After 6 monolayers the 2D pseudomorphic growth ends with the nucleation of elongated islands, wich characterize the bcc transformation in the Kurdjumov-Sachs relationship. The correlation between the morphology, the structure and the magnetism of the Fe film is discussed.
