Model calculations of the GMR and the exchange coupling of magnetic multilayers with non-magnetic spacers — •M. B"ohm1, O. Gebele1, U. Krey1, S. Krompiewski2, and M. Within an accurate recursive formalism based on Green’s functions, see [1], for trilayer systems without impurities, consisting of two ferromagnetic films separated by a nonmagnetic spacer and attached to voltage contacts by ideal leads, we calculate the GMR effect, i.e. the enhancement of the resistivity obtained by switching the relative orientation of the magnetization of the ferromagnetic films from mutually parallel to mutually antiparallel. Both s- and d-states are taken into account in a simplified ’semi-realistic’ two-band approximation with hybridization. The emphasis is on the CPP-GMR and on the exchange coupling mediated by the spacer. Also the case of an ”amorphous” semiconducting spacer is studied in our simplified model.
