The magnetic properties of HoAuGe have been examined as part of extensive studies on the series REAuGe, whose members all crystallise as ternary ordered variants of the hexagonal CaIn2 type. D.C susceptibility measurements on HoAuGe suggest antiferromagnetic ordering at TN=6K, with two further anomalies at T=4K and T=2K. In the paramagnetic regime, Curie-Weiss behaviour is observed, with µexp=10.2µB, indicating that the Ho ions are in the 3+ oxidation state. Specific heat capacity measurements also show transitions at TN=6K and at lower temperatures in correspondance with χd.c. At T=1.7K, powder neutron diffraction reveals magnetic reflections which may be indexed with a propagation vector, τ=(1/2,0,0). As the temperature is increased towards TN, additional satellite peaks are observed, indicating a transition to an incommensurate structure. This may explain the anomalies seen in the susceptibility and specific heat curves.
