Airborne Detection of Landmines: a Review of the Techniques and some Practical Results — •J.L. van Genderen — Department of Earth Resources Surveys, International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences (ITC),P.O.Box 6, NL-7500 Enschede

The ITC is carrying out research and pilot projects using airborne and satellite based techniques to detect anti-tank and anti-personnel minefields in developing countries. This paper will discuss optical detection techniques (film, multi- and hyper-spectral sensors), thermal infra-red techniques as well as microwave techniques (such as Ground Penetrating Radar). Airborne platform parameters influencing detection capabilities are examined, followed by a description of the multi-sensor image and data fusion algorithms employed. The presentation will be illustrated by slides of the results of various projects.
