Statics and Dynamics of a Single Tethered Polymer in Uniform Flow — •R. Rzehak and W. Zimmermann — Institut für Festkörperforschung und FORUM Modellierung, Forschungszentrum Jülich, 52425 Jülich
Static and dynamic properties of a single tethered polymer in a stationary and uniform flow field are investigated for several model systems: For the Rouse chain, the random flight model and a FENE (Finite Extensible Nonlinear Elastic) chain. The effects of the excluded volume and the hydrodynamic interactions are taken into account for the Rouse and FENE model. Nonequilibrium Brownian dynamics simulations are performed for each of these discrete model chains and compared with results derived for the corresponding blob model. It turns out that finite extensibility of the bonds, leads to a scaling behaviour which differs from that of the blob model and the Rouse chain. Since real polymers such as DNA have indeed a limited extensibility this is important for comparison with experiments. Exact analytical results for the polymer shape obtained in the free draining limit, agree very well with simulations for longer chains. Including the hydrodynamic interaction, we can follow the crossover from non-draining to free draining behaviour with increasing flow velocity.
