Minimal Chaos: Jerky Motions from Dynamical Systems — •Ralf Eichhorn, Stefan J. Linz, and Peter Hänggi — Theoretische Physik I, Institut f"ur Physik, Universit"at Augsburg, D-86135 Augsburg
We address the question under what conditions three-dimensional autonomous dynamical systems can be recast into an equivalent explicit third–order ordinary differential equation x...= J(x,ẋ,x) (jerky motion, jerky dynamics) by nonlinear transformations. Distinguishing between invertible (topologically equivalent) and non–invertible (dynamically equivalent) transformations, we give criteria for the structure of the dynamical systems that are jerky and determine the general form of the corresponding jerk function J(x,ẋ,x). We apply this approach to Sprott’s minimal models and the question of minimal chaos.
