Electronic shell structures and spin effects in circular and deformed quantum dots are studied using spin density functional theory. We found that distortions of the dot shape lead to changes in the total spin and polarization of the ground states and show that this "piezomagnetic" behavior can be understood from Hund’s rules and the changes of the level structure at the Fermi surface when the dot is deformed. The theoretical results are compared to recent measurements of addition energies of deformed quantum dots by S.Tarucha and D.G. Austing at NTT.
