The cross section for Raman scattering from a one dimensional gas of interacting electrons is calculated by using the Luttinger model. We show that the peak in the resonant Raman spectra of quantum wires in the polarized configuration of incoming and scattered light, which is commonly associated with ”single particle excitations”, can be interpreted as the signature of intraband spin excitations. In the depolarized spectra, a broad maximum is predicted to exist between the frequencies of the spin and the charge density excitations, due to simultaneous but independent propagation of spin- and charge-density modes.
