In-situ stratospheric aerosol measurements on the M-55 Geophysika high altitude research aircraft inside and outside the 1996/97 polar vortex — •Andreas Thomas, S. Borrmann, and L. Stephanutti — Institut f"ur Physik der Atmosph"are, Universit"at Mainz
In situ aerosol measurements were performed in the northern hemispheric stratosphere between November 13, 1996 and January 14, 1997 inside and outside the polar vortex during the Airborne Polar Experiment (APE). These are particle size distribution measurements with a laser optical particle counter (FSSP-300) on board of Russian M-55 Geophysika high altitude research aircraft. During flights from Rome(Italy) and Spitzbergen at altitudes between ground and 21 km particles with diameters from 0.37 to 23 µm were detected. In the stratopheric background aerosol at 20 km concentrations below 0.1 particles per liter were observed occasionally outside and reguarly inside the polar vortex. In general the observed particle concentrations are two to five times smaller than those measured by the ER-2 in 1988. Vertical profiles from outside (Italy) and inside (Finland) the polar vortex measured during APE will be shown. The lower stratospheric aerosol number concentrations measured by the FSSP-300 system on the ER-2 from Pinatubo period in 1992 [1] are compared with ER-2 data from 1988, [2] and the APE data.
